Reports have emerged on how suspected militia members abducted 12 Muslim worshippers late Saturday night while they were travelling to Gaji village in Bashar District, Wase LGA of Plateau State for Maulud prayers.
The incident, which occurred around 10:30 p.m. on December 21 along the Bunyun axis, saw armed men intercept the victims’ vehicle and whisk them away to an unknown destination, according to local reports.
Security operatives quickly visited the scene, and police sources confirmed that intensified efforts are underway to locate the hostages and apprehend the perpetrators. No group has claimed responsibility for the abduction.
This latest attack adds to a troubling pattern of violence targeting Muslim travellers in Plateau and surrounding states. In June 2025, at least 12 travellers from Basawa in Kaduna State were killed en route to a wedding in Mangu LGA, with 11 others injured. In August 2021, more than 22 Muslim worshippers returning from Islamic New Year celebrations in Bauchi State were killed in Jos North LGA.
Observers have described the recurring incidents as a “dangerous pattern” that undermines citizens’ constitutional right to free movement and disproportionately affects Muslim commuters on inter-community and inter-state routes. Plateau State’s long history of ethno-religious tensions and herder-farmer clashes has contributed to cycles of violence that continue to displace thousands and strain fragile community relations.
Police have assured residents that investigations are ongoing and pledged that all necessary measures are being taken to secure the safe return of the abducted worshippers.
